This lot is the unusual reference 5026, the ’2000s incarnation of the always appreciated reference 96. The 5026 represents in fact the last model made with the small diameter of 33 mm, the typical size that people used to wear in the first part of the century, and the unmistakable Calatrava style. Patek Philippe launched a special set of self-winding “Calatrava” wristwatches in a limited edition of 130 sets of four pieces especially made for the millennium in 2001. Originally the set comes with an “officier” havane leather fitted traveling box and outer box for the four pieces. The platinum example available here is in new old stock condition featuring a beautiful and very clear black “soleil” (sunburst) dial with painted radial Roman numerals and subsidiary seconds at 4. Sold with its original plastic cover it is one of the four 5026 listed in this auction. With Patek Philippe Extract from the Archives confirming the movement, case material, caliber, reference and the sale on 31st January 2001.
