Audemars Piguet has always maintained a fine balance between their offerings of bold and audacious timepieces as well as the more classical creations, like the present lot. This reference 5112 is a notable original piece, preserved in remarkable conditions with few features that make it special. First of all, the white gold circular case has a screw down back with unusual applied pointed bars with sharp facets and high polish finish. Secondly, the dial with tropicalization spreading all over, with applied baton indexes, elegant black crosshairs and signature. Last but not least, yet the most important quality of the whole watch, its 2499 movement. It was one of AP’s first auto wind wrist watch calibers, with 21 jewels, blued screw heads, a swan’s neck regulator and a beautifully machined 18 kt gold weighted rotor. It was in production from 1953 until 1959 when it was replaced by the K2071 and in this pretty short time frame apparently only around 700 of these movements were produced, making this watch very appealing.
