Make It YoursSince its patent in 1955 and official launch in 1956, the Rolex Day-Date has stood as the ultimate symbol of prestige within the Rolex universe. While celebrated for its technical innovation as the first wristwatch to display both the day of the week spelled out in full and the date, the model also became a canvas for some of the brand’s most extraordinary and artistic dial creations.
By the time references such as the Ref. 18388 were introduced, Rolex’s gem-setting ateliers were pushing decorative boundaries even further. The present example showcases one of the most unusual and visually captivating executions: a rare mosaic-style diamond dial, composed of round-cut diamonds meticulously arranged within small apertures set into the gold dial surface. This intricate configuration creates a shimmering, almost textile-like effect, transforming the dial into a piece of high jewellery while preserving perfect legibility.
The opulence extends beyond the dial. This watch is further distinguished by a factory diamond-set bezel and diamond-set lugs, amplifying its brilliance and elevating it into the realm of Rolex’s most lavish gem-set creations. Completing the composition is a Jubilee bracelet with diamonds set into the inner links, creating a continuous flow of light from case to clasp and giving the watch an unmistakable presence on the wrist.
The classic 36 mm Oyster case features a brushed and polished finish, a screw-down caseback and crown, and a sapphire crystal with Cyclops magnifier over the date — ensuring that, beneath its extravagant exterior, the watch remains true to Rolex’s standards of durability and everyday functionality.
Preserved in great overall condition, the case retains strong definition and quality, while the gem-setting remains vibrant and well balanced. The harmony between technical robustness and high jewelry craftsmanship makes this reference one of the most striking interpretations of the Day-Date ever produced.
