The Rolex Cosmograph Daytona Paul Newman “Oyster Sotto” is, without any doubt, a dream watch and a legend among the collectors’ community and Monaco Legend is absolutely proud to offer its client one of these extremely rare ref.6263. In the last years, fewer than 20 examples have appeared at auction since the examples ever produced by Rolex are extremely limited, all of them bearing low serial numbers around 2 085 million, and 2.2 million. The names “RCO’” and “Oyster Sotto”, meaning “Oyster Underneath” in Italian, was bestowed by collectors thanks to the fact that rather than the familiar “Rolex”, “Oyster”, “Cosmograph” that is seen on the classic dial variant for these rare exotic black dials, the text is displayed as “Rolex”, “Cosmograph”, “Oyster”. The reason is vastly explained since apparently these types of dials were destined for pump pusher models, but were repurposed for Oyster cases and had the all-important word applied, before an extremely small number were sold to the public. Recognizable by the art-deco style Arabic numerals and squared markers found in the subsidiary dials, only very few examples of this configuration have appeared and all on reference 6263 models. Featuring its original Mark 1.5 pushers known as millerighe, the stainless steel case of the present watch is in excellent condition as well as an original untouched black dial. The bold red “Daytona” logo above the chronograph’s hour counter at 6 o’clock complements the red outer track perfectly, matching perfectly the “T SWISS T” designation at the dial very bottom edge. This watch represents an extremely rare opportunity to acquire one of the “Holy Grail” models for vintage Rolex collectors and its notable overall quality is worthy of “crowning” the next collection it enters as the ultimate trophy for enthusiasts of vintage Rolex Daytonas.
