The Rolex Submariner has become synonymous with a rugged “tool watch” originally made for divers but considered today as the perfect go-to versatile timepiece. Reference 1680 was the first Submariner to be produced in gold, for clients seeking a touch of luxury with professional capabilities. The present example is a great specimen in yellow gold, absolutely rare with its originally dial and unidirectional bezel for checking decompression time spans. In superb overall condition, this 1680 has a sharp-edged case with nice proportions and still offers its original sticker on the back. The color combination on this reference is undoubtedly striking, associating the warmth of the yellow-gold case and bracelet and the deep oceanic blue bezel and dial with yellow-gold markers, which eventually gave this model the nickname the “nipple dial. The Oyster yellow-gold bracelet has Rolex claps marked D’A, the famous South American Rolex producer of bracelets at that time.
