The Rolex Day-Date is well known for its incredible versatility. A myriad of combinations were made possible by the variety of case materials, the array of bezel patterns and the different bracelet assortments. Over the years Rolex has and continues to experiment also with many different dial designs ranging from hard stone to wood, from butterfly wing to marble, mirror and lacquered finish, to name a few. Rare and attractive, timepieces fitted with such dials are epitomes of luxury and rarity, most of all when made with hard stones. Due to their fragile nature, many of these dials broke during the production which increases the manufacturing cost, so these watches are highly sought after by collectors. This particular Day-Date boasts a striking malachite dial. Equipped on a yellow-gold reference 18 038 in very good conditions, this dial shows beautiful streaks of color that vary in different shades of green. Rolex must have been highly selective in choosing the specific slice of malachite, further affirming their mastery of fabricating such delicate natural materials for use as watch dials.
