First introduced in 1944, the Tri-Compax quickly stood out for its advanced complications and elegant, functional design. Its name, “Tri-Compax,” comes from the three major complications integrated into the watch: a chronograph, a complete calendar, and a moon phase indicator. This combination of features made the Tri-Compax one of the most technically sophisticated and versatile watches of its time, appealing to businessmen, aviators, scientists, and technicians alike. A second, sportier version was launched in the late 1960s, solidifying the model’s legendary status. Among the various versions, the Tri-Compax reference 881 101 earned a special nickname—the “Evil Clapton”—in homage to the celebrated guitarist Eric Clapton, who popularized the model. The nickname “Evil” refers to the striking black dial, a darker counterpart to the famous “Eric Clapton” Panda dial Tri-Compax. The example offered here is a stunning representation of the 1960s Tri-Compax, complete with a bright red chronograph hand and a tachymeter scale on the bezel. Despite the range of complications—full calendar, moon phase, chronograph, weekday, and month—the dial remains surprisingly easy to read. The stainless steel case, with its distinct twisted lugs, adds a sense of dynamism and physicality to the watch. Still nicely preserved, this Tri-Compax stands as an excellent example of one of Universal Genève’s most iconic models.
