From the very beginning, Richard Mille’s guiding principle was to push the boundaries of innovation by using advanced materials and techniques. In 2001, just one year after launching its first wristwatch, Richard Mille unveiled the RM002, a remarkable blend of engineering and technology. Building on the features of the original model, such as the tourbillon, power reserve, and torque indicators, the RM002 introduced a racing-inspired element with a gear-like function selector. Collaborating with Dominique Renaud and Giulio Papi, former Audemars Piguet employees who ventured out on their own in the late 1980s to create complex timepieces, Richard Mille developed a watch that resembled a Formula 1 car more than a traditional timepiece. Encased in a tonneau shape, this model stood out with its distinctive features, a futuristic dial, and a design that seemed ahead of its time. At 6 o’clock, it showcases the tourbillon, with a small indicator to its right. Beneath the 12 o’clock mark, two indicators face outward: one shows the power reserve on the left, while the other, opposite, displays the torque level. The watch’s crown is partly rubberized and doesn’t pull out. Instead, it incorporates a push-button selector that aligns with the small function indicator located between 4 and 5 o’clock, allowing for a literal analog shift of functions. When the crown is set to “W,” it enables winding of the manually wound Calibre RM-002-V1 movement. Setting it to “H” allows the hands to be adjusted, while “N” puts the watch in a neutral position, with no function engaged. Under the curved sapphire crystal lies a dial that even those unfamiliar with horology can easily recognize. The foundation of this intricate design is a subtly dark grey-black titanium base plate, which supports the watch’s complex caliber. Above it, a transparent crystal showcases automotive-inspired white Arabic numerals, marking both the main time display and function indicators. The present RM002-V2 represents the perfect timepiece for the seasoned watch enthusiasts who has explored the depths of horology.
