A cornerstone of Patek Philippe’s legacy in haute horology, reference 3940 is widely regarded as one of the most significant perpetual calendars ever produced. Introduced in 1985, its debut was marked by a limited series of 25 pieces created to commemorate the 225th anniversary of Zurich-based retailer Chronometrie Beyer, a longstanding partner of the maison. Following in the footsteps of the revered references 3448 and 3450, the 3940 became Patek Philippe’s second-ever self-winding perpetual calendar, powered by the ultra-thin caliber 240Q—a mechanical marvel that redefined standards in both horological sophistication and elegance. Boasting a remarkably slim 36mm case, it wears with an understated refinement that epitomizes the brand’s mastery of timeless design. The present reference 3940R is a particularly compelling example, featuring the additional sapphire caseback and a late second-series dial, distinguished by its beveled sub-dials, hallmarks beneath the lugs, and by the absence of an accent on “Genève.” The dial’s “Sigma-Swiss-Sigma” signature sits below the beaded outer track, and a visible cross divider appears at the leap year indicator—all correct features for a second-series example. Preserved in outstanding condition, with the 24-hour sub-dial having developed a warm and inviting patina, this Italian calendar variant captures the essence of the “new-vintage” era—marrying classical elegance with contemporary wearability. A quintessential addition to any discerning collector’s ensemble.
