The Gérald Genta "Oursin," introduced in 1994, stands as one of the most distinctive and imaginative designs in modern horology, showcasing Genta’s ability to draw inspiration from the natural world and transform it into breathtaking timepieces. The name "Oursin," French for "sea urchin," reflects the watch’s design ethos, inspired by the spiny, rounded form of a sea urchin. Genta first envisioned this iconic piece after a family vacation in Corsica, translating the organic beauty of the sea creature into a timepiece with deeply convex sides adorned with intricate beading. The original "Oursin" models featured meticulously crafted beads that were individually threaded and screwed onto the case. These beads were made from precious materials such as white gold, rose gold, and even diamonds, contrasting beautifully against the base. The example presented here is an extraordinary ladies’ "Oursin”. Crafted entirely in white gold, the case and bracelet are lavishly adorned with pink sapphires. The dial, a stunning engine-turned salmon-colored masterpiece, further enhances the watch’s appeal. In 2024, the "Oursin" was reimagined under the Gérald Genta brand, now guided by La Fabrique du Temps Louis Vuitton, as part of the Gentissima collection. However, vintage examples like this one remain highly sought after by collectors, representing the original vision of one of the most influential watch designers of the 20th century.
