The Rolex Cosmograph Daytona reference 6240, introduced in 1965, was the first to feature screw-down chronograph pushers, officially sealing the model’s status as an “Oyster”. Produced exclusively in stainless steel, it featured a black acrylic bezel, unlike the metal bezels of its predecessor, the 6239. With only four years of production, it paved the way for the iconic 6263 and 6265, which continued the Oyster case legacy. The present example is a rare and early iteration of the iconic Daytona, bearing a 1.2 million serial number and powered by the early caliber 722 movement. This watch carries an incredible history, having been owned by a US Navy helicopter pilot. Remarkably, the watch was purchased at the ship’s store during his service from 1963 to 1968, and he wore it with great care and pride, maintaining it over the years. The watch accompanied him on many missions, becoming an integral part of his life. As an early reference 6240 models, this watch features a striking silver dial configuration, notably omitting the “Oyster” designation despite its waterproof pushers. Instead, it showcases the clean and early "Small Daytona" layout, with the classic Rolex/Cosmograph/Daytona text, all preserved in remarkable condition. Adding to its allure, this exceptional piece is offered with a complete set, including the original warranty, a 1981 service record, the original box, and patches. This is an extraordinary opportunity for collectors of vintage Rolex chronographs to acquire not just a timepiece, but a true piece of history.
