The Oscar Waldan Astronic Chronograph ref. 0181 is a deeply compelling expression of independent watchmaking from one of horology’s quiet innovators. A survivor of the quartz crisis and a former collaborator with Universal Genève and Rolex, Oscar Waldan’s legacy was built on foresight, resilience, and his deep admiration for mechanical precision. In the 1990s, long before the current renaissance of neo-vintage chronographs, Waldan drew from his personal stockpile of Zenith El Primero movements—originally produced in 1969—to create a small series of highly complicated, beautifully crafted wristwatches under his own name. The result was the Astronic: a complete calendar chronograph with moonphase, powered by one of the most iconic calibers ever made. The present example is cased in 18K pink gold, with fluted Art Deco–inspired lugs and elegant pump pushers framing a rich, symmetrical dial. Its off-white surface is brought to life by applied gold numerals, three recessed subdials, and bold calendar apertures for day, date and month, paired with a charming moonphase and outer tachymeter scale. Offered with its original Waldan International presentation box, this watch represents not just rarity or mechanical excellence yet a love letter to mechanical horology from someone who refused to let it be forgotten.
