The reference 1491 is one of Patek Philippe’s most artistically distinctive time-only wristwatches of the mid-20th century. Launched in 1940 and affectionately known among collectors as the "Fernandel"—after the famed French actor who wore one—the model is most notable for its sculptural scroll lugs. Often referred to as “riccio” lugs for their curling form, they lend the watch a presence far beyond its restrained proportions. While early versions were fitted with the calibre 12-120 and featured small seconds, the second series, like the present example, was equipped with the calibre 27SC, offering center seconds and a slightly more modern feel. The pink gold case here is notably preserved, showing crisp definition to the lugs and a remarkably honest patina. The dial, too, has aged beautifully, with a clean silvered finish and applied baton indexes that remain sharp and warm. A model that anticipates the stylized experimentation of the 1960s while remaining rooted in classical elegance, reference 1491 stands apart in the brand’s portfolio of mid-century design. This example is not only rare in pink gold, but also distinguished by its condition and character, making it a compelling choice for the connoisseur of sculptural Patek Philippe wristwatches.
