Before the creation of its esteemed L.U.C. manufacture in 1996, Chopard was already laying the groundwork for horological legitimacy with complicated timepieces that stood toe-to-toe with offerings from the most revered maisons. The Classique Quantième Perpétuel Chronographe, reference 36/1224, is precisely such a piece—a bold declaration from the early 1990s that Chopard would no longer play only in the realm of luxury jewelry, but step confidently into the rarified world of haute horlogerie. Released in a strictly limited series of just 100 watches—50 in yellow gold and 50 in white—this model represents a convergence of elegant design and mechanical ambition. The present example, no. 29 of the yellow gold series, is a model of restrained opulence and technical complexity. The white lacquered dial is a masterpiece of legibility and function: Roman numerals frame a complex array of registers displaying the perpetual calendar indications—day, date, month, leap year, moonphase—and, impressively, a full chronograph complication as well. At its heart lies the automatic caliber 889/2, a movement developed in collaboration with Jaeger-LeCoultre. With its careful balance of utility and grace, this rare Chopard is a quietly defiant statement of the brand's capabilities.
