Introduced in 1940 and produced for just over a decade, Patek Philippe’s reference 1509 marks a rare fusion of design purity and experimentation. Unlike its sibling, the 1503, which was made only in steel or steel-and-gold, the 1509 was reserved exclusively for precious metals. At 35 millimeters, the case offered remarkable presence for its era—larger than the definitive 33 mm Calatrava ref. 96. Its slim bezel amplifies this effect, drawing focus to the dial, which becomes the watch’s true stage. The present example, a true timecapsule from the 40s showcases a remarkable dial, beautifully preserved and revealing a two-tone execution of extraordinary charm. Rendered in a contrasting tone, the outer track frames the dial like a portrait, lending both structure and lightness to the composition. The graphics are crisp, engraved and enamelled with the elongated “Patek Philippe & Co.” signature, complete with the accent on “Genève,” details correct for 1945 and often lost. Its teardrop lugs, at once dramatic and restrained, are a defining feature, rarely seen in Patek Philippe’s production.
