Regarded as one of the most intellectually rigorous independent watchmakers of the late 20th century, Daniel Roth honed his craft at the highest level, notably with Audemars Piguet, before becoming a central figure in the modern renaissance of Breguet. In 1988, seeking to assert both creative and technical independence, Roth conceived his double-faced Tourbillon, reference C187, unveiling it the following year as the inaugural statement of his newly founded eponymous maison. Dominating the dial is the oversized tourbillon carriage, accompanied by an ingenious triple-armed seconds display, each hand of differing length tracking 20-second intervals across three separate scales. Turning the watch over reveals further mechanical poetry, with retrograde indications for both power reserve and date animating the reverse. The present example belongs to the sole production series of this reference and is further distinguished by its execution in stainless steel, limited to just 20 pieces, of which this watch is number 03. The dial is adorned with a beautifully executed vertical guilloché, contrasting elegantly with the satin-finished silver hour and minute disc bearing classical Roman numerals. At its heart beats a movement derived from the Lemania 387 ébauche, extensively reworked, elevated, and finished to an uncompromising standard befitting Roth’s philosophy. Preserved in excellent overall condition and accompanied by its full complement of accessories, the present watch represents not only a landmark in independent horology, but also a defining expression of Daniel Roth’s enduring legacy.
