Introduced in 1953, the Patek Philippe reference 2526 marks a pivotal moment as the manufacture’s first serially produced automatic wristwatch. Revered by collectors, it is considered one of the finest time-only watches ever created, combining technical authority with effortless elegance. The case is equally refined—restrained yet confident, drawing inspiration from earlier Bauhaus, influenced references, with softer contours, a more substantial wrist presence, and a water-resistant construction that underscores its forward-looking character. Produced until 1960 in yellow, pink, and white gold as well as platinum, the reference 2526 stands as a defining expression of Patek Philippe at the height of its mid-century creativity. The present example, with the so-called “Golden Rule” dial, is among the most distinctive and coveted executions of this legendary model. Signed by Tiffany & Co. at 12 o’clock, the watch is distinguished by its extraordinarily rare “Golden Rule” dial, bearing the full inscription: “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” Few watches carry such a profound moral message.
Long a mystery, research suggests these dials were commissioned in the 1950s, likely by Lyndon B. Johnson as personal gifts, adding a layer of historical intrigue. Preserved in exceptional condition, the present example stands as both a horological and cultural rarity. The yellow gold case retains strong definition, with a deep, crisp hallmark beneath the lug. The dial is equally well preserved, with its original graphics remaining clear and intact. It is further complemented by an “Aragosta” Ponti Gennari bracelet.
Altogether, this “Golden Rule” reference 2526 represents a rare convergence of watchmaking, history, and personal conviction.
