An icon of restrained audacity, the Cartier Gondole “Jumbo” in white gold belongs to that rare category of watches which transcend fashion and quietly define it.
Introduced as part of the celebrated “Louis Cartier Collection” in 1972, a daring ensemble of twelve refined gold creations, the Gondole embodied Cartier’s vision of modern elegance rooted in Art Deco geometry. Its elongated, vertical silhouette is at once architectural and fluid, framed by a distinctive double-stepped case that subtly recalls the “television-shaped” forms of the era, yet remains unmistakably Cartier.
This white-gold “Jumbo” version offers remarkable wrist presence without ever sacrificing refinement. The proportions are generous, yet perfectly controlled. The white dial, vertically arranged, is adorned with bold Roman numerals, a chemin-de-fer minute track and elegant blued steel hands, all signatures of the maison’s timeless design language. At six o’clock, the discreet “Paris” signature quietly signals its exclusive origin: these pieces were available only at Cartier’s historic boutique on Place Vendôme.
The cabochon-set crown completes the composition, adding a subtle note of colour and tradition. Paired with presentation pouch, the watch retains both its aesthetic purity and historical integrity.
In today’s renaissance of vintage Cartier, the Gondole “Jumbo” stands apart. It is neither ostentatious nor understated, it is assured. A sculptural expression of 1970s Parisian sophistication, rendered in white gold, and as relevant now as it was at its inception.
