Scarcity, complexity and spectacle rarely converge with such harmony. Among the perpetual calendar pocket watches produced by Audemars Piguet in the late 20th century, this example occupies an especially rarefied position.
During its production, the reference was offered with several dial variations, differing in details such as subsidiary seconds, index placement, and signature. The present example features a particularly balanced and attractive layout, attributed by scholars to the second series.
The visual impact is immediate and compelling. The openworked architecture reveals the intricate interplay of levers, gears, and springs behind the perpetual calendar, while legibility remains masterfully preserved. Blue chapter rings provide clear contrast against the silvery movement.
Turning the watch over reveals an equally captivating view: the calibre itself, engraved and skeletonized to the same exacting standard, visible through the exhibition back and signed “Quantième Perpétuel No 004,” underscoring its exclusivity. Notably, the leap year indication is ingeniously integrated with the display of the months, both read by a single hand.
