Belonging to the elusive non-Oyster chronographs of the 1940s, reference 4099 occupies a special place in Rolex history. Produced in extremely small numbers, likely fewer than one hundred, it stands out for its sculptural “flared” lugs, dramatic and architectural in design.
The present example, in stainless steel with pink gold accents, is among the most attractive configurations. The warmth of the gold contrasts beautifully with the steel case, while the strong lug definition and visible serial number enhance its appeal to connoisseurs.
The dial has aged with honesty, developing a gentle patina. Pink gold Arabic numerals at 12 and 6, dot indexes, and baton hands are complemented by a richly layered display with telemeter and tachymeter scales.
Powered by a manual-wind chronograph movement, it reflects the robust yet refined character of Rolex’s pre-Daytona era.
For the seasoned collector, the 4099 is not merely rare, it is one of the iconic “fancy lug” chronographs, where tool watch meets sculpture, and opportunities such as this remain few and far between.
