Introduced in 1945 to celebrate the brand’s 40th anniversary, the Rolex Datejust was the first self-winding chronometer wristwatch to display the date in an aperture at 3 o’clock, an innovation so natural today that it is easy to forget how revolutionary it once was. The present reference 1601, dating to circa 1973, represents the mature expression of that idea.
