Since the early 20th century, Vacheron Constantin has transformed coin watches into objects of true refinement, where history, metallurgy and horology converge within a single precious disc.
The present reference 33059, produced in the 1990s, is crafted from a 1904 American $20 “Liberty Head” gold coin. At first glance, it remains exactly that, a solid gold Double Eagle with its bold relief intact. Yet a discreet pusher reveals its hidden nature.
Beneath the hinged cover lies the legendary skeletonised calibre 1003, bearing the Geneva Seal. Introduced in 1955, this hand-wound movement, just 1.64 mm thick, was for decades the world’s thinnest, here presented in an openworked form of remarkable delicacy.
Measuring 35 mm, the coin translates beautifully to the wrist, its warm gold case developing an attractive, even patina over time. This watch is a dialogue between eras: a coin struck at the dawn of the 20th century housing a mid-century masterpiece, assembled at its close.
Accompanied by its original warranty, it represents a rare opportunity to acquire not merely a watch, but a layered object where American numismatic heritage meets Genevan haute horlogerie.
