A natural bridge between the romantic Bubbleback era and the fully mature Datejust, reference 6305/1, introduced in 1953, marks a decisive step into modernity. Known to collectors as the “Ovettone” or Big Bubbleback, it is distinguished by its pronounced domed caseback, designed to house early automatic calibres such as the A296.
With its 36 mm proportions, remarkably contemporary even today, the 6305 was produced in steel, yellow and pink gold. In stainless steel, however, it reveals a particular purity: less ostentatious, more utilitarian, and closer to Rolex’s original tool-watch spirit.
As one of the earliest Datejust references, it embodies a key milestone: the first self-winding chronometer wristwatch with an automatically changing date displayed on the dial. Evolving from the Bubblebacks of the 1930s and 1940s, it refines their robust architecture into a more balanced and enduring design.
The present example is especially appealing, featuring a honeycomb dial of remarkable texture and depth, enhanced by the red “Datejust” signature, details quietly cherished by collectors. Preserved in excellent condition, this reference 6305/1 stands as a compelling transitional piece, capturing the moment when Rolex transformed innovation into timeless design.
