In 2001, Harry Winston inaugurated the groundbreaking Opus project, an ambitious horological initiative conceived to rethink the very architecture of time display. Each Opus model would be developed in collaboration with an independent master watchmaker, pairing technical innovation with avant-garde design. The Opus 9 represents one of the series’ most daring achievements, created in partnership with master watchmaker Jean Marc Wiederrecht and visionary designer Eric Giroud, two leading creative forces in contemporary haute horlogerie.
In this extraordinary timepiece, gemstones are not merely decorative but integral to the indication of time itself. Rejecting traditional hands and dials, the watch displays the hours and minutes through two parallel articulated diamond chains, composed of 33 baguette-cut diamonds and accented by mandarin garnets that mark the readings. This radical mechanism transforms the passage of time into a kinetic jewel, fusing horology and high jewelry into a single functional sculpture.
The impressive, architectural case in white gold is conceived as a structural frame that both protects and showcases the mechanism. Its openworked construction reveals the entire chain system from every angle, emphasizing the hypnotic motion and mechanical poetry of the display. Sculptural yet highly technical, the design achieves remarkable visual lightness despite its complexity.
A bold statement of conceptual watchmaking, the Opus 9 distills horology to its purest essence, time expressed through motion, light, and form, standing today as one of the most original and intellectually compelling creations of the Opus series.
