The Rolex Day-Date stands among the most iconic and historically significant models in watchmaking. Introduced in 1956 at the Basel Fair, it was immediately positioned at the top of the Rolex catalogue. Exclusively crafted in precious metals, the Day-Date was conceived as the ultimate expression of elegance and prestige. At the same time, Rolex introduced a bracelet specifically designed for this model, now commonly referred to as the “President” bracelet. This designation became associated with the watch after the Maison presented a Day-Date fitted with this bracelet to U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower. The present example belongs to reference 18238, appreciated for the new caliber 3155, featuring the innovative double quickset function, allowing independent adjustment of both the day and the date. What truly sets this watch apart is its rare obsidian dial. Formed from natural volcanic glass, obsidian is prized for its deep gloss and unique patterns, creating a striking contrast with the yellow gold case and applied numerals. Further underscoring its importance, this exact watch is illustrated in Pucci Papaleo’s book “DAY-DATE, The Presidential Rolex” (pp. 412–413). Preserved in excellent overall condition, it retains its original caseback sticker, a detail highly appreciated by collectors.
