Affectionately nicknamed “Tasti Tondi” by Italian collectors for its distinctive round chronograph pushers, the reference 1463 stands apart within the Patek Philippe canon as the brand’s first water resistant chronograph wristwatch, combining technical innovation with timeless design. Manufactured between approximately 1940 and 1968, the reference was produced in a total of just 740 examples, of which 405 were cased in yellow gold. The present watch is part of the last series produced between 1961 and 1968, a group numbering approximately 80 pieces in total. Within this already rare subset, roughly two-thirds featured hard enamel (“indelebile”) dials, prized for their enduring beauty and resistance to aging and only about half of these were further distinguished by applied yellow gold “bullet” indexes, making configurations such as the present example exceptionally scarce. The dial is of particular note: entirely engraved and enamelled by Stern Frères from a solid silver base plate, it exemplifies the pinnacle of mid-century dial craftsmanship. As customary, the signature of the retailer, Cartier, stands apart, lending the watch an additional layer of prestige and rarity. To date, this is the only known example of a reference 1463 bearing the Cartier signature, elevating it to a category of true uniqueness. The two-piece yellow gold case, manufactured by FB Taubert, corresponds to the third and final case series, identifiable by its more restrained lugs, devoid of "riccioli" and with a subtler curvature. This evolution in form reflects the gradual shift toward a more modern aesthetic in the final years of production. Accompanied by its Extract from the Archives and a detailed Study by Tortella & Sons, this watch represents a confluence of rarity, scholarship, and historical importance. A singular opportunity for the discerning collector to acquire what is, in every respect, a unique iteration of one of Patek Philippe’s most iconic chronograph references.
