In the late 1970s, at the height of the Quartz Crisis, Audemars Piguet faced a crucial dilemma. The rise of electronic watchmaking was impossible to ignore, yet introducing a quartz version of its most iconic design, the Royal Oak, risked undermining the brand’s identity. Under Jacques-Louis Audemars and Georges Golay, this option was seriously considered, but ultimately set aside. Instead, the Manufacture chose to develop a parallel line, allowing it to explore quartz technology without altering its icon. Introduced in 1978 and designed by Jacqueline Dimier, the reference 6005 embodies this vision. Its case adopts a softer, more rectangular geometry with beveled edges, offering a more fluid silhouette compared to the sharp architecture of the Royal Oak. While it retains key elements of the Royal Oak, most notably the integrated bracelet and the same high level of finishing, it deliberately differs in others, such as the absence of the iconic octagonal bezel and the replacement of visible screws with discreet studs. The present ref. 6005BC is a Jumbo-sized example in white gold, combining strong proportions with refined execution. Its blue tapisserie dial, set with diamond hour markers, enhances the watch’s precious character, adding a subtle brilliance to this distinctive and historically significant model.
