Among the most elusive chapters in the Speedmaster narrative, this extraordinary prototype stands apart not only for its rarity, but for the very purpose behind its creation. Unlike standard production pieces, this watch was never intended for commercial release. Its stainless steel case, manufactured in the United States to satisfy the stringent requirements of the Buy American Act, signals its direct link to NASA’s operational framework. Produced in an extremely limited run, just ten examples, these watches were supplied in 1969 in connection with the Space Shuttle era, representing a fascinating bridge between experimental engineering and practical deployment. The dial is impressively remarkable. Distinguished by its unusual radial-register layout, it departs from the conventional Speedmaster aesthetic, offering a more technical, instrument-like display. The presence of a 0–60 calibrated bezel, of which only a handful are known, further underscores the experimental nature of the piece. Every element feels purposeful, designed with function in mind rather than commercial appeal. Engraved discreetly on the caseback, the marking “Not For Sale” serves as a quiet reminder of its intended destiny, never boutique windows, but mission briefings and controlled environments. Numbered 3 of 10, this example captures the essence of a moment when watchmaking intersected directly with the ambitions of space travel, resulting in an object that is as historically compelling as it is exceptionally rare.
