A remarkable piece of horological and diplomatic history, the present Cartier pocket watch is a unique creation dating to circa 1925, directly associated with the Locarno Treaties, one of the most significant episodes in European diplomacy following the First World War. Manufactured by Cartier / European Watch & Clock Co., the watch is housed in an 18K yellow gold case of impressive 45 mm diameter, enhanced by a sophisticated combination of black lacquer and black diamond-set elements to the bow and band. The watch is particularly distinguished by its historical provenance: the case is engraved with the signature of Aristide Briand together with “Locarno, October 15, 1925”, one day before the treaties were formally signed on October 16. The agreements, concluded by Germany, France, Great Britain, Belgium, Italy, Poland and Czechoslovakia, sought to guarantee European borders and establish a new era of reconciliation between France and Germany. A leading French statesman and eleven-time Prime Minister, Briand played a central role in the negotiations and was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1926 alongside Gustav Stresemann for their efforts toward Franco-German reconciliation. The watch is believed to have been presented to Briand during his diplomatic activities in Geneva. Powered by a manual-winding 18-jewel movement and accompanied by its fitted box and 18K gold chain, this exceptional Cartier is far more than a timepiece: it is a tangible object connected to a defining moment in twentieth-century European history.
