Designed by Louis Cartier in 1912, the Tortue is one of the seminal creations of Cartier, alongside the Santos and the Tank. At a time when virtually all watches were round, this case—with its bold curves, balancing straight lines and rounded contours emerged as an aesthetic statement. As early as 1928, the Tortue incorporated ambitious complications such as a single-push-piece chronograph, thus becoming the Maison’s most daring design. The WGTO0008 model is part of the Cartier Privé collection, an annual program launched by the House in 2015 to present contemporary, limited edition reinterpretations of its most iconic post Crash creations such as the Tank Cintrée and the Tonneau in previous editions. In 2024, for its eighth edition, Cartier Privé dedicates this collection to the “Tortue”, remaining faithful to the 1912 design while adopting slightly more streamlined proportions. The case is crafted in platinum and features a faceted crown set with a cabochon ruby, a silvery opaline dial, Roman numerals, and rhodium plated apple shaped hands, all paired with a leather strap and a platinum pin buckle. The hand wound mechanical movement, Caliber 430 MC, ranks among the thinnest calibers ever developed by the Cartier Manufacture. Produced in a numbered series strictly limited to 200 platinum pieces, it is stands out for the rarity characteristic of all Cartier Privé editions, designed for a clientele of collectors seeking both the authenticity of historic design and the excellence of the manufacture’s contemporary craftsmanship.
