Introduced in 1981 as the successor to the celebrated reference 3448, the reference 3450 “Padellone” represents the final evolution of Patek Philippe’s iconic automatic perpetual calendar wristwatch before the introduction of the reference 3940. Produced until 1985, the reference incorporated the new self-winding calibre 27-460 QB (Quantième Bissextile), whose principal innovation was the small aperture between 3 and 4 o’clock displaying the leap year within the four-year cycle. Early examples featured Arabic numerals and a red leap-year disc, while later watches, including the present example, display Roman numerals I, II, III and IV. The 37.5 mm case is distinguished by its broad, larger and flatter bezel, sculpted lugs, sapphire glass and redesigned snap-on solid case back with a practical “tongue” for opening. The cases were manufactured by Favre & Perret of La Chaux-de-Fonds, identified by the hammer mark 115. Scholars estimate that approximately 237 examples were produced, overwhelmingly in yellow gold, with fewer than ten examples made in white gold. Most of the production was concentrated particularly in 1981, 1983 and 1984, making this 1985 example one of the final watches of the reference. Accompanied by its original Patek Philippe Certificate of Origin and box, in remarkable condition, the present watch is identified by movement no. 1’119’798 and case no. 2’805’693, manufactured in 1985 and sold on the 11th November 1985. It is a compelling late-production example of one of Patek Philippe’s rarest perpetual calendars.
