The present timepiece is a particularly fine example of Vacheron Constantin’s understated elegance during the 1950s. Its exceptional 38 mm case represents a remarkably large size for the period, when classic gentleman’s wristwatches generally measured considerably smaller. Such oversized proportions were highly unusual for a refined dress watch of the era, giving the present example a particularly commanding yet elegant presence on the wrist. The warm 18k pink gold case is complemented by a beautifully preserved cream-coloured dial, featuring applied Arabic numerals and faceted baton indexes, a dotted outer minute track and a subsidiary seconds register at 6 o’clock. The harmonious combination of the generous case proportions, slender bezel and elongated lugs creates a distinctly balanced and sophisticated aesthetic. Fitted with a manual-winding movement, the watch is an evocative example of the bold yet refined oversized dress watches produced by Vacheron Constantin during the post-war period.
