Audemars Piguet excelled in an entirely different field from the 1950s through the 1970s: that of the ladies’ jewellery watch, where traditional horological expertise almost entirely gave way to a level of jewellery craftsmanship comparable to that of the greatest Maisons. The present example illustrates this particularly creative period with remarkable distinction. The exceptionally wide and supple bracelet is entirely crafted in 18K yellow gold, featuring an intricate woven texture with an organic appearance, evocative of a finely scaled straw weave. This remarkable feat of goldsmithing lends the piece extraordinary flexibility on the wrist, while retaining the density and lustre characteristic of solid gold. The bracelet is crossed diagonally by two lines of claw-set gemstones mounted in white gold: on one side, a row of round blue sapphires; on the other, a line of diamonds displaying a beautiful white brilliance. This striking intersection of gem-set lines gives the piece a rare sculptural character, poised between a high-jewellery bracelet and a wristwatch. The diamond-shaped dial is discreetly nestled within the golden weave, almost concealed by the richness and texture of the watch. Rendered in a refined champagne tone and deliberately understated, it bears only the simple “Audemars Piguet” signature, subtly reminding the beholder that beneath this precious jewel lies a genuine horological movement. A true jewel before being a watch, the present piece bears witness to the exceptional level of virtuosity achieved by Audemars Piguet in the art of adornment for the wrist.
