In 1928, Rolex revolutionised the world of men’s wristwatches with the introduction of the Prince, a rectangular model with a distinctly Art Deco aesthetic that quickly became a success and helped establish the Geneva-based company’s growing international reputation. Its defining feature was the unusual dial, divided into two separate sections: one displaying the hours and minutes, and the wider lower section dedicated to the seconds, allowing the hands to remain separate. This elegant and functional configuration earned the model the nickname “Doctor’s Watch”, as physicians used it to accurately measure patients’ pulse rates, a feature Rolex incorporated into its contemporary advertising. The present example is particularly noteworthy for its case, crafted in Paris by a renowned casemaker and jeweller. The “RL” maker’s mark on the case back is almost certainly that of Robert Linzeler, a distinguished Parisian jeweller known for producing cases and luxury objects for maisons including Cartier and Boucheron. The pink dial features black Roman numerals, subsidiary seconds at 6 o’clock and elegant leaf-shaped blued-steel hands. The Rolex signature, crowned logo and “Fab. Suisse” designation complete this refined Art Deco composition.
