The Day-Date has been at the top of Rolex non-sports collection since 1958. 50 years later in 2008 was released a specimen representing a true mixture of modern charm and vintage aesthetic: the reference 218206, with a massive 41 mm case in platinum making it the largest platinum Rolex President that has ever been created. The case is the traditional Rolex Oyster one with a 3-body case, with a screw down back and crown and a smooth bezel. The bezel on this platinum version of the Day-Date differs from its lesser cousins in that it dispenses with the iconic fluted bezel in favor of a smooth, polished one, probably given the fact that platinum is way more difficult to machine. The present lot is offered in extremely valuable conditions with no evident signs of wearing both on the case and on the platinum president bracelet. The ice blue used on the dial is charming, a special dial color specially reserved for platinum Rolex watches, and not available with any other metal. Part of the dial are the hand-applied Roman numbers that are constructed from blocks of solid 18 CT gold for added depth and three-dimensionality. The hues of blue stand against the 18 CT white-gold Rolex Crown applied under the day aperture at the 12 o’clock position of the dial. Massive yet elegant, with a water resistant at 100 meters/330 feet, date, day, hour, minute, second functions this lot still remain a perfect luxury watch.
