Another Record Sale

28 July 2022

April 2022 Auction: MLG demonstrates its continued growth with new record sale with a turnover of €20 million

The Monaco Legend Group team curated a strong sale, including key pieces from the John Goldberger collection and a collection of Stella dial Rolex Day-Dates. Two key highlights from the sale were a stunning pink gold Rolex 6062 Oyster cased triple calendar with moon phases. Dating to 1953 these watches are one of the most desirable Rolex watches ever made and the rarity and condition of this watch was unparalleled. The watch sold for €2,106,000 which highlights the relevance of the condition of this watch. Similarly rare and beautiful was a white-gold Patek Philippe “Padellone” perpetual calendar that was the property of Mr. John Goldberger. The reference 3448 was again in stunning condition and is incredibly rare and sold for €747,500.

…the sky is the limit when it comes to what bidders are prepared to pay!

Co-Chairman Davide Parmegiani is delighted with the result. “In the current market it is clear that a watch needs to be either incredibly rare or in outstanding condition to truly achieve the highest price. However, when those two elements combine, the sky is the limit when it comes to what bidders are prepared to pay!”

MLG Co-Chairman Claude Cohen said: “As the auctioneer, this was one of my favorite sales to date. The atmosphere was electric as lot after lot was sold with some exceptional prices realized.”

The highlight of the sale was a collection of eight vintage Rolex Stella dial Day-Dates. The Stella dials get their name from the company that provided the pigment and lacquer that was used in these dials. The dials were used from the early 1970s until the 1990s and have now become incredibly desirable and command rocketing prices as such. The last of the collection was a yellow-gold reference 18,038 with yellow Stella dial. Yellow is always one of the most prized of these vintage lacquered dials, and Lot 272 sold for an astonishing €650,000.

The watch was sold to Andrea Parmegiani’s telephone bidder. “It was a very tense bidding war, with a huge amount of interest in the watch,” states Parmegiani. “I am delighted that my client was the winning bidder and the watch now resides in a very important collection.”
