At the highest level of collecting, certain iconic references become almost impossible to define. They are not simply important, but watches that lay the foundations of what we understand about the art of complicated watches. These timepieces represent the pinnacle of traditional horology, where technical ambition, craftsmanship, and restraint come together in perfect balance.
This April 25 & 26 at auction in Monaco, we are proud to present a curated selection of 54 exceptional Patek Philippe watches. From the most sough after grand complications of the modern era to the most historically important vintage references. Here are the highlights:
Perpetual Calendar Split-Seconds Chronograph 5004R, bracelet, 2007 (Lot 30)
Within the world of modern grand complications, the reference 5004 occupies a newly respected position, being one of the most in-demand watches of this collecting era. This pink gold example, fitted with a matching later added pink gold bracelet, offers a rare and highly attractive variation on the model. The warmth of the metal and opaline dial bring a different character to the reference, without compromising its technical gravitas. Preserved in excellent condition and accompanied by a full set of accessories, it represents a refined and wearable expression of one of Patek Philippe’s most important complications.
Perpetual Calendar Chronograph 3970EP “Saatchi”, platinum, 2016 (Lot 56)
The reference 3970 is one of the great perpetual calendar chronographs of the modern era. This example, created for the 2015 Patek Philippe Watch Art Grand Exhibition at the Saatchi Gallery in London, elevates that legacy significantly. Fitted with the rare black dial featuring a single Breguet numeral at 12 and tachymeter scale, it is one of only 5 watches made in platinum with black dial and represents the very last batch of reference 3970 produced. Preserved in exceptional condition and bearing its full set of original box and papers, this 3970 “Saatchi” in platinum is a grail contemporary Patek.
Nautilus 5711/1P, platinum, circa 2016 (Lot 77)
This Nautilus in platinum represents a special production run limited to approximately only 20 watches before Patek introduced its 40th anniversary platinum Nautilus model. Never officially for sale, it was quietly presented to the very best clients of the brand. So called the “Pre-Series” Nautilus anniversary, it features a specially selected vivid blue dial with no diamond indexes. A plain and discreet appeal that today has a unique spot in collecting for it is the only Nautilus in platinum that is not embellished with precious gem-set nor diamonds. This present example is preserved in truly exceptional condition bearing its full set of original box and papers.
World Time 605HU cloisonné enamel, 1948 (Lot 98)
Only a dozen examples of World Time pocket watch reference 605HU featuring an enamel dial have survived to this day. Among these, only four watches have ever surfaced to the market bearing an enamel dial depicting “North America”. The present World Time pocket watch with enamel dial depicting the map of “North America” is truly one of the best examples of this reference we have ever encountered. Preserved in exceptional condition with its enamel dial perfectly preserved, and accompanied by its extract from the archives, this patek philippe pocket watch deserves to sit in the world’s most prominent watch collection for it is, and will forever be, one of the most historically significant and beautiful watches ever made by Patek.
Padellone 3448 with doré dial, 1971 (Lot 110)
Among perpetual calendars, the reference 3448 holds a singular position. This example, fitted with an extraordinarily rare doré dial and luminous accents, stands apart even within that already rare reference. Perpetual Calendar Split-Seconds Chronograph 5004P, circa 2006 (Lot 140)
The reference 5004 represents one of the most complete expressions of traditional watchmaking, combining a perpetual calendar with a split-seconds chronograph in a perfectly balanced composition. This platinum example stands out not only for its condition, but for its exceptional completeness. Accompanied by its original Certificate of Origin, additional solid case back, setting accessories, and full set, it offers the kind of integrity and continuity that collectors increasingly prioritise. As an EU-sourced watch, it also presents a practical advantage for European buyers.
Perpetual Calendar Split-Seconds Chronograph 5004P, 2010 (Lot 194)
A later production example of the 5004, this watch reflects the reference at its most refined stage. Produced in 2010, it features the larger crown and improved proportions of the final series, details appreciated by collectors. Preserved in excellent condition and accompanied by its Certificate of Origin, it represents a pure and elegant expression of one of Patek Philippe’s most celebrated grand complications. As a non-EU-sourced watch, it offers particular appeal for collectors outside the European Union.
Tasti Tondi 1463 in steel with rose dial, 1942 (Lot 246)
Among vintage Patek Philippe chronographs, the reference 1463 holds a special place. Known as the “Tasti Tondi”, it introduced a sportier, water-resistant case at a time when such ideas were still emerging. This first-series steel example is exceptional; fresh to the market, retailed by Hausmann, and fitted with a unique rose dial that has aged to a remarkable tropical tone. A watch that sits at the intersection of rarity, condition, and historical importance.
Chronograph reference 530, 1953 (Lot 250)
The reference 530 is one of the great post-war Patek Philippe chronographs. Larger in scale and perfectly balanced, it captures a moment when functionality and elegance fused effortlessly and elegantly. This example, preserved in outstanding condition, retains crisp case proportions and a beautifully composed dial with tachymeter scale. Increasingly difficult to find at this level, it stands as a cornerstone of serious vintage collecting.
A collector’s benchmark
What unites these watches is not simply their rarity, but their position within the history of watchmaking, as well as their remarkable preserved state of condition. These are the watches that define categories. Today, as collectors continue to focus on substance over novelty, these references are increasingly recognised for what they truly are. Not just important watches; but benchmarks.
This April 25 & 26 in Monaco, they take their place among the most important watches of the season.
