Inquire NowWhen reference 6239 debuted in 1963, it marked the genesis of what would become the world’s most iconic chronograph: the Rolex Cosmograph Daytona, redefining the chronograph aesthetic, creating a cleaner, more legible, and decidedly modern design that would set the stage for six decades of evolution.
The present stainless steel example is a particularly early and desirable specimen, distinguished by the hallmarks of the very first 6239s. The bezel is calibrated to “300 Units per Hour” with fine hash marks, a configuration exclusive to the earliest production period. Its silvered “Double Swiss Underline” dial reveals two separate SWISS signatures beneath 6 o’clock, along with the delicate underline beneath “Rolex,” denoting the brand’s transitional move from radium to tritium luminous material.
Perhaps most enchanting is the dial’s transformation over time: its originally black subsidiary registers have matured into a rich, even tropical brown, a patina born only through decades of exposure to light and the natural aging of the pigments. Combined with its original pump pushers and Valjoux 72B movement, this example encapsulates the earliest expression of the Daytona legend in its purest, most authentic form.
