In 1988 Rolex decided to upset the old mechanism of the Daytona and use another one fully automatic, the first one in the history of Rolex equipped on a chronograph. The present lot is a very rare and fascinating white-gold Daytona reference 116 509 automatic wristwatch fitted with the extremely supercool blue dial. The white gold 41 mm case is perfect with screw down pushers and back. The Oyster bracelet is also in white gold is the perfect alchemy of form and function. This model’s Blue dial with counter features 18 CT gold appliqué hour markers and hands in Chromalight, a highly legible luminescent material. The central sweep second-hand allows an accurate reading of 1/8 second, while the two counters on the dial display the lapsed time in hours and minutes.
