Most of the watches produced by Cartier over the years have always been amazed by its ability to totally break the mold with the aesthetic standards of the period in which they were designed. The “Diabolo” model was launched in 1991, featuring the celebrated “attaches à vis armurier” or “gunsmith” style tube screws to fasten the lugs, with cabochon decoration to the ends as used in Cartier’s early 20th century designs. The name is derived from the conical shape of the large winding crown, resembling a “diabolo” or “Japanese devil”, a toy popular in the 18th and 19th centuries. The lot offered here is a fine exponent of the Diabolo family: with lady size of 27 mm, it has been manufactured in yellow gold with rounded case and bezel, cabochon sapphire-set winding crown, straight screwed lugs with blue cabochon and domed sapphire crystal.
