The present example is a particularly distinguished interpretation, housed within a genuine 1898 American $20 gold coin. Its obverse features the celebrated Lady Liberty, crowned with a coronet inscribed “Liberty” and encircled by thirteen stars—a symbol deeply embedded in American identity. The reverse reveals a powerful American eagle clutching arrows and an olive branch, embodying both strength and peace.
A subtle pusher on the coin’s edge releases the spring-loaded cover, unveiling a hidden timepiece that can also function as a miniature desk clock. At its heart beats the caliber 1003—introduced by Vacheron Constantin in 1955 for the brand’s bicentennial. Measuring a mere 1.64 mm in thickness, it represents one of the world’s thinnest hand-wound movement.
Combining American iconography with Swiss precision, this rare and historically resonant timepiece is a captivating example of horological ingenuity and aesthetic restraint.
