In 1984, at a time when much of Swiss watchmaking was still regaining confidence, Ebel made a remarkably bold move. Having reintroduced its chronograph powered by the legendary El Primero, the brand chose not to pause, but to elevate. The result was a perpetual calendar chronograph built upon Zenith’s high-beat automatic base enhanced with a Dubois-Dépraz module.
Context is everything. Complicated mechanical watches were far from guaranteed commercial successes in the mid-1980s. Many major houses were only cautiously revisiting grand complications. Yet Ebel presented a serially produced perpetual calendar chronograph with conviction and technical legitimacy, a statement that signaled genuine ambition.
Importantly, the brand preserved its distinctive design language. The five functional screws on the bezel, the fluid, almost seamless case profile, and the absence of sharp edges create a watch that feels sculpted rather than assembled. Despite the complexity of its indications, chronograph registers, full calendar displays, and moonphase, the dial remains harmonious and legible.
The present white gold example is part of a small production in this configuration. In precious metal, the watch gains an added sense of gravitas and discretion.
With hindsight, this reference stands as a defining moment for Ebel, proof that, even in uncertain times, the brand was willing to compete at the highest level of mechanical watchmaking.
