When A. Lange & Söhne re-emerged in 1994, it did more than relaunch a brand, it reasserted Saxon watchmaking at the highest level. The Lange 1 became the emblem of that revival: off-centre, architecturally balanced, and unmistakably confident. Its outsized date, inspired by Dresden’s Semper Opera House clock, was not a stylistic flourish but a declaration of intent. Beneath the dial, the three-quarter plate in untreated German silver, twin barrels and screwed gold chatons established a new modern classic.
A decade later, Lange expanded the concept with the Lange 1 Time Zone. Rather than complicating the original design, it layered in functionality with clarity. The familiar asymmetrical layout remains, now joined by a second time display at four o’clock and a rotating city ring framing the dial. A discreet arrow identifies the selected city, while day/night indicators for both home and local time allow intuitive reading at a glance. The large date and power-reserve display anchor the composition, preserving the visual equilibrium that defines the model.
