The here offered “Soleil Sculpté”, was crafted in pink gold at the beginning of the 1950s, and stands as a testament to a moment in time when optimism, sensuality and volume returned to the decorative arts. Across architecture and design, the rigid geometries of the interwar years gave way to softer, more fluid forms, seen in post-war Italian furniture, French decorative arts, and the sweeping lines of early 1950s automobiles. Following these ideas, the case of the present timepiece is extraordinary. Not merely round, but bombé, inflated, alive. Its segmented bezel radiates outward like a stylised sunburst, hence the poetic nickname, each convex division catching light differently, creating a choreography of reflections across the wrist. The present watch, most probably unique, appears to have been specially customized by a North European jeweller in the 1950s, giving rise to an extraordinary and highly distinctive configuration. In the early 1950s, Patek Philippe created bespoke pieces for distinguished clients, blurring jewellery and horology, and this watch feels exactly that: conceived not for discretion, but for presence. To encounter this creation today is to witness a maison experimenting with volume and light at a time when the world itself was rediscovering both.
