In 1953, following the accession of King Saud bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, a distinguished commission was placed through Patek Philippe’s Saudi retailer, Red Sea Trading. It called for reference 600/1 pocket watches and reference 2481 wristwatches, each with a custom enamel dial depicting the King’s portrait and ruby-set hour markers, objects conceived not for commerce, but as symbols of sovereignty. While gifting fine timepieces was common in the West, in the Middle East such pieces carried strong diplomatic significance, serving as tokens of royal favor. In fulfilling this request, Patek Philippe took part in a notable historical moment. The present reference 2481, delivered in 1956 and confirmed by Extract from the Archives, exemplifies this production. Its rose gold case frames an ivory enamel dial with ruby indexes and a finely executed portrait of King Saud in Grand Feu enamel. Rare and exceptionally preserved, it stands among the most desirable mid-century Patek Philippe watches.
