It was in the 1970’s that Cartier introduced a model as rare as it sought after by collectors, the reference 17002, known as the Jumbo, with proportions significantly larger than those of the classic Tank Louis Cartier, and most notably the one and only version of the Tank Louis Cartier ever equipped with an automatic movement, a fact unique enough in the history of this model to justify, on its own, its status as a collector’s item. Produced likely in a run of only a few hundred pieces, it remains today one of the most coveted vintage tank models on the auction market. The case, with the line generally softer than those of the tank normale that preceded it, houses the automatic caliber 170, an ETA based movement modified to Cartier specifications, a technical innovation that required a case back domed at its center to accommodate the rotor, and breaking with the tradionally flat case of the Tank Louis Cartier. The pure white lacquered dial features the Cartier signature and the word Swiss under the VI, surrounded by black roman numerals printed in the House's traditional style, over which elegant blued steel sword shaped hands glide.
