The reference 4178 deserves particular attention among Vacheron Constantin’s vintage chronographs. Introduced in 1940 and produced until 1964, it was, together with reference 4072, one of the Maison’s longest-produced chronograph references. With approximately 924 examples made in total, compared to around 1,178 examples of reference 4072, the 4178 remains notably scarce today. Manufactured in 1941 according to its Extract from the Archives, the present example is distinguished by its 18K pink gold case, characteristic faceted lugs and rectangular chronograph pushers. Its exceptional two-tone pink dial is further enhanced by a rare medical pulsation scale calibrated for 30 pulsations, allowing the wearer to determine a patient’s heart rate using the chronograph. The reference 4178 was fitted with either Vacheron Constantin calibre 434 or 492, derived respectively from the celebrated Valjoux 22 and 23 ébauches. These movements were extensively modified, finished and regulated by Vacheron Constantin, combining proven chronograph architecture with the Maison’s exacting standards.
Accompanied by its Extract from the Archives and original presentation box, this remarkable example combines rarity, an exceptionally attractive dial configuration and an important place in Vacheron Constantin’s chronograph history.
