Beginning in the 2000s, drawing on the expertise of its own gem-setting workshop, Rolex enabled the Daytona to embark on a new chapter in its history, one marked by rare and precious materials that had long been foreign to a model designed primarily for the world of sports timekeeping. With dials carved from meteorite or entirely paved with diamonds, and bezels set with coloured gemstones in the most unexpected shades, the Geneva-based company revealed a jeweller’s side that one would not immediately associate with this chronograph, born on the racetrack. It is in this spirit that the reference 116589SALV, introduced around the year 2000, stands out as one of the most distinctive interpretations. Its case, crafted in 18K white gold, is adorned with a bezel set with red sapphires, a shade rarely used by the House, giving the timepiece an instantly recognisable visual identity. The dial, meanwhile, is carved from authentic meteorite, a material of extraterrestrial origin shaped by cosmic forces beyond human control. Its crystalline structure creates random patterns that shift depending on the angle of the light, meaning that no two dials cut from the same block ever feature exactly the same design, making each piece truly unique. The Daytona reference 116589SALV perfectly combines Rolex’s technical expertise with avant-garde design and refined luxury. More than simply a chronograph, it is an exceptional expression of Rolex’s gem-setting craftsmanship and its ability to transform one of its most iconic sports watches into a highly distinctive jewel.
