Introduced in 1963, the reference 6239 represents a pivotal chapter in the history of Rolex chronographs, being the first Daytona-style model to feature a tachymeter scale on the bezel and contrasting chronograph registers on the dial. Produced throughout the 1960s, the reference was eventually succeeded by the manually wound Oyster references with screw-down pushers 6263 and 6265, making late examples such as the present watch particularly appealing to collectors. Dating to circa 1969, the present reference 6239 is among the final examples of the model’s production. It is fitted with the Valjoux 722-1, an evolution of the legendary calibre 72, which had powered Rolex’s hand-wound chronographs for many years. The 722-1 incorporated a number of technical refinements while retaining the robust architecture and column-wheel chronograph mechanism that characterized its celebrated predecessor. The present watch offers a fascinating glimpse into the final years of one of Rolex’s most influential chronographs. Its late production date, classic silver 6239 configuration and Valjoux 722-1 movement combine to make it a compelling example of the reference that laid the foundations for the modern Daytona.
