Introduced in 1940, the reference 4178 became one of Vacheron Constantin’s most celebrated vintage chronographs and remained in production for more than two decades. Designed during a period in which chronograph wristwatches were becoming increasingly important both as precision instruments and as elegant timepieces, the 4178 is distinguished by its sculpted teardrop lugs, stepped bezel and harmonious proportions. Produced in different metals and with successive generations of manual-winding movements, the reference has acquired an enduring reputation among collectors and is today regarded as one of the defining chronograph designs of mid-century Vacheron Constantin. The present example, produced in 1952, is crafted in 18K yellow gold with an attractive silvered dial. It is accompanied by a Vacheron Constantin Certificate of Authenticity, travel pochette, cloth and invoice of service, further enhancing its appeal as a well-documented example of this important vintage chronograph.
